Digital Migration On As KTN, NTV And Citizen Shutdown

You know things are thick when competitors -different species of predators band together for a common course and the signs of the times seem to be so. Yesterday, Royal Media Services, KTN and NTV, three of the most watched Kenyan TV stations lost a case in which they were attempting to stall the ongoing Government backed digital migration.

And aside from the obvious, one issue has really shocked me… The lack of foresight shown by the executives of the respective broadcasters. It seems they had all their eggs in one basket: that of victory. The three broadcasters have been caught flatfooted where they needn’t have been simply because they refused to contemplate the possibility that they could lose the case.

The only stations still on air at the moment are KISS TV (which was recently being lampooned after it rebranded), GBS (a station backed by South Koreans), Mediamax’s K24 (which is owned by the president of the republic of Kenya) and state-owned KBC.

Whatever happenes next, it is safe to say that the three broadcasters have already lost a couple millions of shillings in advertising revenue. I guess that’s why all the smart chaps place their advertising money on the internet *insert smug smile*.
