Allan On Probation Again As Contestants Perform American Hit Singles in TPF5

Judging by the basket of surprises that took place at the eviction night on Saturday, the Tusker Project Fame 5 contestants were bound to go all out on the Sunday show which would determine which of the remaining 12 would stay in the Academy or pack their bags.

Of interest to note though was that none of the aspiring stars had managed to secure immunity from nomination during the week, probably because the faculty thought it prudent to put everyone on the same pedestal and see how well they would fair on.

Theme-wise, the episode went ‘American’ with the contestants trying their hand (or voices) at popular Billboard 100 songs. The darling of the public vote, Doreen was first up with a rendition to Jessie J’s ‘Dominoe’ and her performance was good enough to ward off the wrath of Judges Ian, Hermes and Juliana.

Samantha came up with a rather difficult ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ performance as Allan played it even riskier with Chris Brown’s ‘She Aint You’ but the judges told them their presentations were fair but needed much more work. What was even more worrying was the fact that Judges Juliana and Hermes had as few ‘nice things’ to say on the night about a majority of the performances as Judge Ian perennially does.

Jackson, who enjoyed the perks of immunity last week, possessed an aura of assurance on the night as he sang Maroon 5’s ‘Moves Like Jagger’. Though he enjoyed his performance, Judges Juliana and Ian were left unimpressed and even went ahead to say that he had regressed somewhat. He took it in stride saying he was confident he thought he did a rather great job. Admittedly the tune was catchy though the delivery may have landed him in hot soup… time would surely tell.

The huskily refreshing Ruth gave the most memorable performance of the night, as she took on the vocally demanding Beyonce Hit ‘Best Thing I Never Had’. She sang it with such expertise and excitement that the end could call for nothing short of a standing ovation, with Judge Ian cleverly remarking, “Finally, the show has just started”. The crowd literally cheered and applauded for over a minute as even host Sheila had a bit of a tough time getting people quiet again.

Other performances of the night included Damien’s witty version of Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the Way You Are’, Nancy’s version of Katy Perry’s ‘Fireworks’ which the judges said sounded rather ‘karaoke-ish’ and Fatuma’s ‘Where You At’ by Jennifer Hudson. Fatuma may have taken abit more than she could chew on that one though as Judge Juliana said she had problems managing the ‘highs and lows’ which left us wondering just what was managed on the song then.

Joe, a traditional favourite of the judges, audience and faculty, wrapped it all up by singing Jason Derulo’s ‘In My Head’, a display which did not go down too well with them though as Judge Hermes declared he just wasn’t ‘feeling’ the song and it seemed he had gone down just a notch.

The contestants who were finally placed on probation were Eunice, Fatuma, Damien, Allan (once again) and Nancy.
