A couple of years ago, I wrote a piece on Ghafla stating that I find Lupita to be 100% sexy. Let’s just say I have foresight. Anyway, I came across this speech by Lupita Nyong’o who had been given an award by Essence Magazine; she had won the Essence Magazine Black Women In Hollywood Breakthrough Performance Award and she opened up about her insecurities.

But what I heard left me gutted. Lupita spoke openly about the nonsense that is the entire Team Lightskin vs Team darkskin debate and she spoke with the passion of someone who has been victimized because of her complexion. And while speaking, she broke down crying when she read an email sent to her by an African girl who was contemplating bleaching her skin.

The thing about me however is that I have been told by alot of people that I lack empathy therefore I do not want to muddle in something I do not understand such as “emotions” so allow me to let Lupita Nyong’o to speak on her own behalf.
