A Glimpse into 1922 East Africa

Ever wondered what Kenya was like in pre-independence days when our fore-fathers were still under colonial rule and our country was not referred to as Kenya but British East Africa Protectorate?

Better yet, what was journalism in those days like and how was the news reported? Well, we came across this archived clip from the New York Times in a 1922 edition and it featured news of how some ‘natives’ had caused a riot and were killed by colonialists.

It was interesting to observe the descriptions of what the landscape was like at the time as well as what the perception of the region was from abroad. At the time there was a global economic recession threatening to boil over (though the world market eventually crashed in 1929) and it seems East Africa wasn’t left untainted.
