Beware! 11 rules Kenyans need to be cautious of under the new traffic regulations
What Kenyans need to know about the new traffic rules
Motorists will now have to part with up to Sh10,000 on the spot for flouting traffic rules under new laws that will be enforced by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
1. There will no longer be arrests on the roads, towing of vehicles to police stations or payment of fines in cash to traffic police officers in a move aimed at reducing corruption.
2. Offenders will no longer be required to go to court but will instead pay instant fines using mobile money and get a standard receipt for it.
3. Unqualified drivers will be slapped with a Sh5,000 fine while owners of public service vehicles who hire such drivers and conductors will pay twice the amount.
4. Motorists exceeding the speed limit set for their vehicles by between one and five kph will receive a warning.
5. However, exceeding the speed limit by between six to 10 kph, they will be fined Sh500 while between 11 to 15kph attract a fine of Sh3,000.
A fine of Sh10,000 will be penalised on those who exceeding by 16 to 20kph.
6. Drivers and passengers who put their hands out of the window will be fined Sh1,000 on the spot.

7. Touting at bus and matatu stops across the country will attract a maximum fine of Sh3,000, payable on the spot.
8. Driving a tinted public service vehicle which is popular with urban matatus will attract a Sh3,000 fine.
9. Driving a vehicle without a valid inspection certificate will force one to part with a massive Sh10,000.
10. The same amount will be charged on driving a vehicle without the identification plate affixed or not fixed in the right manner.
11. Failure to renew, carry or produce driving licence will cost a motorist Sh1,000.
It remains to be seen if these stringent regulations will once again restore sanity on our Kenyan roads reminiscent during the times of the late Transport Minister John Michuki.
