This is why Mudavadi is giving Jubilee Party sleepless nights
The possible alliance between Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi and Cord is seen by many Kenyans as a real game changer in the country’s political scene.
The move will see Mudavadi link up with his former party boss in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Raila Odinga.
The ‘Super Alliance’ will be payback time for Mudavadi who was betrayed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto in 2013.
Mudavadi shortly before the 2013 elections, had been ‘chosen’ to be the Jubilee Alliance flag bearer before being bizarrely dropped in unclear circumstances by Kenyatta and Ruto.
Work of the ‘devil’
President Kenyatta later said that it was the work the work of the ‘devil’ who made him strike the deal that would have seen Mudavadi as the flag bearer and Ruto as his deputy.
Should Mudavadi join forces with Cord principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula, it will be a major headache and stumbling block for Kenyatta and Ruto’s quest to retain power during next year’s elections.

The coming together of Mudavadi and Cord was fronted soon after Raila and the ANC leader met at the Democratic Convention in the United States.

Should the alliance succeed, there will be a consolidation of vote-rich Western into one basket and for the first time the region, which has always been divided, will head into an election as a united front.
However, Kenyatta and Ruto are banking on the fact that the four leaders will not remain united as they all have declared their intentions to vie for the presidency.
Emerging cracks
Cracks have already started to appear in the Cord coalition in recent weeks as the three constituent parties have been pulling in different directions as their leaders disagree publicly on key issues such as the timing of naming of the flag bearer to fight it out with Uhuru.
Each of the leaders wants the others to sacrifice their ambitions.
The entry of Mudavadi looks to complicate matters even more in an already fragile Cord.
None of the Cord principals is ready yet to shelve their ambitions in favour of the ANC leader who has already made it clear he will go nothing short of the presidency.
He has consistently projected himself as the better alternative and a ‘safe pair of hands’ ready to lead the country, citing his vast experience and non-abrasive brand of politics which he insists appeals to all Kenyans.
What is for sure is that a Mudavadi-Cord alliance will be the best bet to wrestle out Jubilee from power.
Only time will tell whether all these leaders will remain united and selflessly sacrifice their individual ambitions in order to clinch power.
