Killer Matatu Driver Granted Bail

The driver of the ill-fated Ongata Rongai matatu that killed five people on Langata Road last week has been granted a Ksh 1 million cash bail.

Francis Mukuria Kinyanjui, popularly known as “Ambulance” by his peers will however stay in custody for two weeks for police to conclude their investigations.

Magistrate Barbara Ojoo on Tuesday ordered that the bond terms granted to the driver be applicable after the 14 days.

Mr Mukuria who had disappeared after the fatal accident, later presented himself to the police and was slapped with multiple charges of causing death through reckless driving, operating without a licence and driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

She said that despite the public outrage and protests the case elicited, the accused can not be denied his constitutional right to bond.

The accident sparked massive protests by Multimedia University students and Ongata Rongai residents.
