I Partied In Westlands On Friday Evening.. This Is How It All Went Down #TeamKenya
Last Tuesday, I got an invite from a friend of mine to join him and his girlfriend for an evening drink at a popular joint in Westlands. I was excited; no one had invited me for drinks in like 7,689,908 years so by the time evening came, I was shivering with excitement.
I left the office the moment the clock hit 5 o’clock, made a beeline for my apartment along the highway and ran a bath while playing Sybreed on repeat. When I was done, I dressed up in a pair of jeans and a white v-neck muscle tee-shirt (even skinny men love to flaunt a little skin.) I wore my new pair of New Balance sneakers, grabbed my tweed jacket after dousing myself thoroughly with Calvin Klein’s Euphoria, locked the house and left for Westie.
I arrived 30 minutes earlier (because I am a sucker for punctuality). My best friend arrived later, hand in hand with his girlfriend and an unknown lady in tow. They quickly settled in and we began the introductions after exchanging pleasantries.
Teddy’s girlfriend was a secretary at a hospital in town; her friend, Jane, was an intern at a media house and was single and ready to mingle! What I didn’t know was that I was being set up for a date masked as an “evening drink”.
I didn’t mind getting hooked up, it was easier than having to hit the dating scene all over again. Jane and I exchanged numbers as we ordered our drinks.
Bottles of Tusker came riding on a tray. It was about time. Before we drank the first bottle, Teddy suggested we toast to the Kenyan heroes who were still bagging medals in Beijing.
We all stood up, bottles in hand. Everyone in the club with a Tusker in hand followed suit. We raised our beers in the air and chanted in unison #TeamKenya, a warm patriotic chant to the heroes who were raising our flag abroad.
It was a warm, profound moment.
While finishing our last beers before leaving the club, Teddy stood up cheerily and commanded everyone to shush. When all was silent, he raised his half-drunk bottle high above his head and said, “I want to make this toast to Tonny, a great friend, confidant, drinking buddy and my hero (he was alluding to the night I saved him from rent arrears). We have come this far together bro and in the words of Captain Flint, ‘it only gets better from here!”
Everyone toasted to me as I stood there rooted to the spot, grinning from ear to ear. Jane was the last to sit down and everyone turned to look at her. She began to speak, “I also have a hero to celebrate tonight. Tonny, I celebrate you for being wonderful tonight, for keeping this party on its feet and for being overly accommodative. Cheers to a new beginning, and here is to our friendship!”
I was on cloud nine. Nirvana. People!
Don’t feel left out, you can celebrate your heroes too by raising a Tusker to them every time they do something phenomenal.
