For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a solemn day of mourning the martyrdom of Hussein in 680 AD at Karbala in modern-day Iraq. It is marked with mourning rituals and passion plays re-enacting the martyrdom. [sic]

Basically Ashura festival is celebrated to mourn the death of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.

Shia Muslims are required to whip and cut themselves with razorblades, chains and knives during Ashura festival which happens for 10 days.

Muslims across the world started celebrating Ashura on the sunset of Monday the 10th of October 2016; celebrations were marked with parades, marches and some Shia worshipers flogging themselves in the streets.

Daily Mail captured some photos of Ashura celebrations by Shia Muslims in Chennai, India. The photos show shocking images of faithful cutting and whipping themselves in the streets.

Young children were not spared either, their blood were also spilt just like any other person who participated in the bizarre celebration.

The most disturbing sight was a scene of men participating in self-flagellation; they flogged themselves until blood oozed out of their skins.

The sight of men all covered with their own blood as they marched in the street is frightening enough to give many people nightmares.
