These Are The 8 Awesome Songs Of 2016 That You Probably Didn’t Notice…And Songs That You Definitely MUST Listen To
The Year is almost over and we’ve probably seen or heard more music than we can remember.
It’s been a crazy year, full of many surprises, many new artists coming up, many dramatic TV moments and quite a number of foreign stars flocking into the country for shows – with some getting hurriedly deported ignominiously.
But while the masses have been fixated on the same old bunch of stars, whose music is now becoming really stale and predictable, a new batch of fresh talent has been bubbling under and causing major waves – but with little recognition either by the mainstream or the social media.
While the Bahatis and the Willy Pauls and the Femi Ones have kept us gripped by their shenanigans, we’ve been missing the real action and missing out on some of the biggest music releases of 2016 by artists who are way too good, sound way too fresh and appear way top sophisticated to be slept on
But thankfully, a singer like Phy, that little girl with the voice of a goddess, has not been ignored by the bubblegum-loving Kenyan Public.
Phy has been doing her thing and doing it pretty big – her song Taboo has become such a major hit for all the right reasons.
And of course, who can forget the biggest musical coup of 2016? Orchestrated by none other than the Rap General himself, original King of the Flow, Nyashinski who not only blasted his way back into superstardom but gave us classical gems along with it
2016 has seen Nyashinski edge closest to attaining the Eric Wainaina legendary status pretty fast.
And as long as Mungu is with him, then all is possible.
Aside from that, we need to shine a light (a bright light) on some of the best musical releases of 2016 that you probably missed because you were too busy watching Bahati sit on the Presidential throne or tweeting out some stale memes to your friends.
8. Cheza Mbali – Baby T featuring Various Artists

These are artists in the league of Chiwawa and Cannibal and Sharama. And with artists like these on a song, you’ve pretty sure got your whole party covered. Cannibal starts off the jam with some of his illest flow and by the time we get to Chiwawa, it’s official, the Kings of Underground rap are back!
7 . Kayvo Kforce feat. Voste Wade – Sipendi Madrama
This is the perfect trap jam to close out the year. The beat is hard and bouncy and the rappers, starting off with the Namba Nane native Kayvo Kforce spit fire after fire lines that will keep you jamming and nodding your head along all through. He’s Kenya’s Ali Kiba – not just for the similarity in looks but also sound. Vivian is soooo hot! Soooo sweet! Sings so well and can really kill a tune! She sure deserves more hype. Even on this one, Vivian has outdone herself. On HiiNiYa, the Godfather of Genge comes back alive to remind us just who has been holding it down the longest. And who has been the hottest act in the game for over a decade now – Him. Nonini does a sterling job in this one featuring one of the sleekest singers of 2016 Jegede. The video is actually where the whole juice and flavor is as it was shot in Dubai at a staggering dollar budget that can fund Nyandarua County. It’s the best Kenyan music video of 2016. And you get to know that Nonini is still one of the Baddest in the game when he starts off his verses. Absolute smash.
1 .Jo-1 – Don’t Disturb My Dance
She’s more remembered for the amazing job she did as the Sakata Dance judge on Citizen TV. A show she held down for years adjudicating the best dance talents in town for a whopping four seasons. Herself an earth-shattering dancer with skills and energy that could rock the international dance industry, Jo-1 also is a sizzling singer with couple songs under her belt. Formerly singed to Grandpa Records, Jo-1 dropped her latest Soca hit song Don’t Disturb My Dance some two months ago. The fast-paced song features Ammi the Veggie Man as the hypeman who keeps the fire blazing all song through. It’s the perfect blend of popular Caribbean tunes with a Kenyan vibe that’s sure to tear up dance floors across the Country. With a lively video shot smack in the middle of Nairobi streets, the agile dance guru makes her stamp as the most baddass female performer in Kenya. And for all of you who know Chiziqa, you’re sure to be blown away by her latest release Don’t Disturb My Dance. It’s infectious and utterly captivating. Nothing combines adeptness quite like a girl that can not only dance her butt off but sing to the heavens too. Absolute magic!
The list is obviously not exhaustive. There sure are some more songs that should have made it on this list, but these eight need the most immediate attention over any other song this year.
