CJ Maraga hosts Raila team at Judiciary
Chief Justice David Maraga on Tuesday met with Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula at the Supreme Court and outlined his vision for the judiciary under him.
Maraga assured the leaders that he was committed the transformation of the judiciary which was started by his predecessor, Dr Willy Mutunga.
The cord leaders pledged their collective support for the CJ as he embarks on steering the Judiciary into the future.
Under his tenure, the CJ said he would accelerate judicial reforms in order to improve the quality, efficiency and speed of service delivery to Kenyans.
This he said will be done by reducing case backlog, digitisation of Judiciary operations, maintaining the independence of the Judiciary, defending and upholding the Constitution, fighting corruption and improving access to justice.
During the courtesy call, the CJ addressed the issue of election petitions which was a key matter of interest for the Cord leaders.
He assured the leaders that the Judiciary is prepared to handle any election petitions that may arise next year and hoped sufficient funds will be made available to enable them perform the task satisfactorily.
Cord principal Raila Odinga was one of the first leaders to congratulate the CJ upon his confirmation.
He expressed confidence in Maraga, praising his deep understanding of issues relating to human and public rights as well as governance and the exercise of power.
The Cord leaders have had a frosty relationship with the Supreme Court following their 2013 election petition whose ruling went against them ushering the Jubilee coalition led by Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto into power.
