Ford Kenya officials threaten to remove Wetangula as party leader
A row has erupted over the leadership of the Ford Kenya party with some of its officials threatening to remove party leader Moses Wetang’ula from office.
The group led by Peter Munyae who claims to be the party’s National Organising Secretary, have written to Moses Wetang’ula and Secretary General Eseli Simiyu, giving them a week to give reasons why they should not be ejected from office over mismanagement and governance issues.
In the letter copied to the Registrar of Political Parties, Munyae said the two had failed Ford Kenya, reducing it to an ethnic party with the intention of “killing” it.
Munyae cited failures to convene subsequent National Delegates Conference and the General Council, which its constitution requires to meet at least twice and once every year.
According to the letter, the last delegates and council meetings were held in 2011 without any plausible reasons.
Munyae also cited failure of the two to conduct grassroots and national party elections and instead appoint “strangers” as officials to various organs within Ford Kenya.
He blamed Wetang’ula of failing to reward hard working and loyal party members and instead filling Ford Kenya’s nomination slots with outsiders from other parties.
Last month, another group of Ford Kenya officials drawn from Rift Valley, Nyanza, Western and Eastern regions censured Wetang’ula claiming he was not serious with his presidential bid.
“You cannot sit in Bungoma all the time only to ask Raila and Kalonzo to support you for the top seat. He should prove that he is ready for leadership,” Trans Nzoia county interim chairman Ken Wafula Wafula said.
They asked Wetang’ula to emulate his co-principals Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka – who they said have shown some sense of seriousness with the quest to ascend to the presidency.
The group said that in their view, Ford Kenya does not have a presidential candidate yet.
