Kenya and South Africa Rank as Top ‘Googlers’ in Africa

In a world that is increasingly tech savvy and more obsessed than ever with interconnecting, sharing photos and sending or receiving emails, Webempires, an equally obsessed visual representer has amalgamated information released by leading web analytics site Alexa to come up with a map of the globe that shows the number one sites visited in each country.

What clearly comes out is the fact that internet usage is convincingly dominated by Google and Facebook, though the intensity and the general area differs based on a number of facts although at the top of the list seems to be geographic area, economic stabilty as well as internet penetration..

While there are some countries where internet is almost a basic human right, such as in Finland, in other areas such as Somalia or Cuba, according to the chart, it remains a preserve of the lucky few.

Interesting to note also is that Google owns about 23 of the top 100 websites visited in the globe, according to Alexa and Facebook seems to have the strongest presence in North and Sub-Saharan Africa than anywhere in the globe.

Infact, in the whole of Africa, only Kenya and South Africa are not ‘Facebook addicts’ or have ‘unknown’ data results, with the exception of Cameroon where Yahoo! ranks as the number 1 website visited. Even neighbouring Uganda and Tanzania have Facebook as their first website.

Europe, North and South America, Australasia and (most of) the Middle East have Google listed as the top visited website as well though China, Russia and Japan are set apart with top spot listings of Baidu, Yandex and Yahoo! Japan consecutively.

The question remains whether a thirst for knowledge (Google) or the necessity to stay in touch with friends and family (Facebook) takes precedence. What do you think?
