Nation Media Group Kills Nairobi News!

Last night, i was out drinking with a friend. And as we imbibed on what can only be described as the sweet (nope, it’s actually very bitter) nectar of the gods that instills courage in the hearts of men, he dropped a bomb on me, he was out of a job! Now, my friend works at Nation Media group and I know full well that they are one of the top 5 best monetized corporations in Kenya so I figured he meant he was fired.

And so I asked him why he was fired and he broke down -there is nothing sadder than a grown man crying. Amidst the sobs, he informed me that Nairobi News was shut down yesterday at 6pm. I immediately reached out to Baba Ghafla and he made some calls and contacted a senior level manager who acknowledged that NMG had pulled the plug on Nairobi News.

According to this source, Nairobi News has received a thorough thrashing from it’s main rival The Nairobian and they have struggled ever since inception inspite of the rather hefty substantial investment poured into the newspaper. Personally, I think it is rather magnanimous of the manager to admit that they lost out to The Nairobian which he tipped to do better than The Standard -the main flagship newspaper of The Standard Group.

And so, just like Sporton, this project has been scrapped and all personnel linked to the project are out of a job (that is what my friend said). While they will retain the website, it will remain in the shadows.
