Racism In America’s Biggest Film Award Gets On Lupita Nyongo’s Nerves As She Protests Lack Of Inclusion #OscarsSoWhite
Some actors and actresses in Hollywood are planning to boycott 2016 Oscar award gala which will be held on February 28th. Reason being? …Racism!
The Academy Awards aka ‘Oscars’ is an annual American awards ceremony honoring cinematic achievements in the film industry. It’s the most prestigious film award in the world.
Of course our girl Lupita Nyong’o won her first academy award for Best Supporting Actress in the movie ’12 Years A Slave’ in 2014.
She missed to bag Oscar nominations in 2015 and also in 2016. But Lupita wasn’t alone, as a matter of fact, all black actors and actresses missed nominations for the two years in a row.
The lack of black thespians in Oscar nominations sparked online protests with hashtag #OscarsSoWhite trending worldwide in 2015.
Now two hashtags are trending; OscarsSoWhite and #OscarsStillSoWhite. It was widely expected Idris Elba would bag a nomination for ‘Beast Of No Nation’ but unfortunately he didn’t.
Critics argue dope movies which starred black actor such as Creed, Concussion, Beasts of No Nation and Straight Outta Compton should have received more nominations.
Lupita Nyong’o too was frustrated by the lack of black inclusion in 2016 Oscars. The Kenyan actress expressed her disappointment with Oscar discriminatory nominations.
“I am disappointed by the lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy Award nominations. It has me thinking about unconscious prejudice and what merits prestige in our culture. The Awards should not dictate the terms of art in our modern society, but rather be a diverse reflection of the best of what our art has to offer today. I stand with my peers who are calling for change in expanding the stories that are told and recognition of the people who tell them.” Wrote Lupita.
