Just a Band: The Movie Features in Canada’s Hot Docs Festival
North America’s largest documentary market, the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival announced 25 projects that were represented at this year’s forum which took place from the 26th of April to the 6th of May 2012. Among the projects selected was a feature about Just a Band, produced by Kenya’s Wanuri Kahiu and Anjali Nayar.
The documentary is titled Just a Band: The Movie, and is a kaleidoscopic portrait of Kenya’s four artistically eclectic twenty-something year olds who form the afro-electro-pop group.
The film follows them through projects and performances, including the street parties and the making of their extremely successful music video Ha-He which went viral globally.
A record 165,000 people attended this year’s festival, which was sub-divided into eight sections: Canadian Spectrum, International Spectrum, Made in Southwestern Europe, World Showcase, Next, Rise Against, Nightvision, Documentary Plays Itself and Shorts.
Winners included The Boxing Girls of Kabul (Canada), Call Me Kuchu (USA) for Best International feature and My Thai Bride (Australia) for Best Mid-length Documentary.
At this year’s festival, Mozilla staged a two day workshop to explore how to use internet and other media platforms to give new dimensions to their documentary storytelling.
