Who Killed Njoki Chege?

Once upon a time, there was a lady by the name Njoki Chege. How to describe this lady or how to even start thinking on how to describe her is a puzzle itself. But because we have awkwardly tried to do it before, I would only repeat some of the words we used when she courted controversy and made men feel insecure at the mention of her name.

Njoki Chege took the town by storm when, audaciously, she took on men head on. She loathed almost everything you so valued as a man: from Blue Subaru cars to Instagram accounts and smart phones. Njoki just established herself as an iron lady.

She became an overnight household name in Kenya thanks to her controversial articles on her Daily Nation column. Funny enough, she angered even people within and around her circle, with one of them warning her to keep off courting controversy.

We are in a society that has greatly succumbed to male chauvinism, and Njoki was no exception. She couldn’t take men head on any more. She dwindled.

But who killed Njoki Chege? And why?

You see, we live in a very unforgiving and blind-folded society. A society that will hunt you down when it realizes you are sculling your boat the opposite direction. A society that is willing to sacrifice you as long as it achieves what its desire is.

Njoki Chege was a sprouting dedicated and true writer with the daily nation. I don’t mean she no longer writes. She does but as it is evident, her mojo, determination and motivation was long killed when men and women in equal measure rose against because she had boldly told it on their face.

She started off with telling men with blue subarus they were cheap and attention seekers. She was true and genuine because that was her opinion. She was entitled to it anyway. Everybody has always been entitled to their opinions as long as they don’t infringe on others’ rights.

Then she landed on instagramers and smart phone owners and told them on their faces that they were an irritation with flaunting photos of cheap meals prepared by their girlfriends. They were outraged. They wanted to tear her apart.

Her last but not least nail was on women who cried foul of being cheated on by their husbands. I can’t remember it too well but all I know is she really vomited truth on them.

And this is when she started facing opposition from within and without. Larry Madowo in one of his columns in the Daily Nation told her to stop courting controversy. Larry is a veteran and respected journalist. Whatever he speaks or writes affects so many of us. We really look up to him for inspiration and encouragement. His warning on Njoki Chege was hard tackle to say the least. And this jeopardized every effort this girl made to become a revered writer and agenda setter.

Then there was KTN’s Betty Kyallo. A Subaru aficionado, Betty clearly felt insulted when Njoki ranted at blue Subaru owners. Betty couldn’t withstand this young girl ranting on the other side of the competition. She took to her social media account and bashed Njoki Chege, telling her she knew absolutely nothing about cars. All she did was yap and yap to gain traction. She was looking for cheap publicity. Again, Njoki’s balls had been crashed if at all she has balls. Someone in her profession had crashed her desire to write and write and write.

Then the blogs. Yes, I agree we called her all names. Husband seeker, sex-deprived little spoiled brat, et al. We really called her names after we felt hit below the belts with her enchanting articles yet very true and genuine. Honest as well.

Njoki must have been greatly discouraged as her writing has greatly plummeted. I guess, and I want to believe I am right, it is blamed on us. We killed Njoki Chege and her writing prowess.

Njoki please drop a bombshell. We want you back. Even if it is about me. Just drop one. Some of us miss you like we have known you ever since we stopped clinging on our mothers’ breasts.
