10 Things You Didn’t Know About Calif’s Rising Star
Kim NewSkul Genge is one of Calif Records rising stars. Last year, he debuted his track Rafiki and he had a few interesting things to share with us about the song. Check them out below.
1. While recording the first verse of Rafiki, Jimwat was in the studio and after listening to the first version, he told him to go change the lyrics and add more ‘substance’.
2. Part of the video of Rafiki was shot in Kamiti Maximium Prison which focuses on rehabilitating inmates through discovering and nurturing talent. The dancers were actual prisoners serving time there.
3. He never writes lyrics on paper. He composes memorizes all the lyrics in his head.
4. The initial idea for instrumental for Rafiki was a lingala/afro sound but he changed the idea to house/electro/dance after pitching the idea to Benja who made the instrumentals.
5. The song was mixed and mastered by Clemo who added his ‘magic’ to the song by adding drums and piano to the instrumentals.
6. The first part of the video was shot on Good Friday last year (2012) and it was just him and Charles Luche in the studio and it took around three hours and almost 20 takes on the greenscreen.
7. He has a Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering and another Diploma in Enterprise Development.
8. Alpha Msanii was supposed to rap a verse on the single Rafiki but after listening, they decided it should be a solo project.
9. He gets stage fright that is characterised by hands shaking and palm sweating.
10. His first video interview was by Ghafla! Kenya.
