Meet Naomi Wachira, The Voice Behind Waiting By Rabbit ‘Kaka Sungura’!

Naomi Wachira is a singer whose voice arrests and captures, transporting you to the inner sanctum of her mind.

According to her bio, Naomi was born and raised in a musical family in a small town called Kijabe. This, if you are proficient in geography is in the breathtaking Rift Valley province. At age 5 she joined her parents’ choir, which spurred her love affair with music as a way to not only understand the world, but also express her introverted self. They do say that artists are naturally melancholic, smiling with the world during the day then retreating to their cocoon in the dark. Most are recluses who need space and silence to create.

The bio continues to say that through age and a myriad of life experiences, Naomi developed a songwriting style that is simple and evocative. This style is presented with shocking sincerity! Naomi draws from artists such as Tracy Chapman and Miriam Makeba, blending elements of African rhythm, American folk, and soul. She, elected by the universe to sing truths, chooses to tackle issues affecting society. All this whilst narrating her own story as an African ‘diasporan’ woman finding her way in the world. As a child of two worlds, she has but one mission she says, “to write music that is applicable to anyone regardless of their education, beliefs, or socio-economic status.” Naomi’s first EP “African Girl” was released in November, 2012 to rave reviews. Naomi, juxtaposed between Kijabe and Seattle, is slowy but surely fortifying her place in the world. Listen to her debut song below.

AFRICAN GIRL

See I’ve been walking down this road
For about 35 years now, and I can tell you, it’s been one hell of a ride
And I’ve been carrying my father’s words that he said to me
Learn to be wise, walk with integrity and be honest
And I can hear my grandma say, child I’ve got nothing to give you
But may God be with you, in that distant land

I am an African girl; well I know where I’m coming from
And I know who I want to be
I am trying to defying everything they said of us, we who have chocolate skin…..
