Caroline Mutoko Celebrates The Westgate Heroes!

All week long, Caroline Mutoko has been celebrating the heroes that emerged at one of Kenya’s darkest hours and today i was impressed by her celebration of a hero who probably doesn’t consider himself a hero. A waiter at Arte cafe who rather than hog the limelight remained in obscurity.

She shared a touching story about how the unknown waiter led some of the patrons who were enjoying their brunch at Arte Cafe (30 in number) to safety after the terrorists had attacked and lobbed grenades at Arte Cafe.

Read the story below:

HEROES AT WESTGATE – THE UNKNOWN WAITER FROM ARTCAFE.

Faiza Hersi sends this story:

I was at the art cafe balcony and no one really heard our story.
We were shot at for several minutes before the gunmen entered the mall.
I recall one person was shot and injured and one elderly man died of a heart attack. We were shown an exit through the balcony of the art cafe by one very brave art cafe waiter.

I never got his name but as soon as he heard shots being fired inside the building, he led about 30 of us on the balcony to safety. When we escaped, (appr. 30 mins after the first shots at us were fired), we ran up the ‘puppy road’ (this is where those guys are always selling puppies) towards kenya power where a friend lived, and thats when we started to see the authorities coming.

Celebrate this hero from Artcafe. He saved many lives.
