Gospel Under Scrutiny: Rivalry And Enmity Within Kenya’s Gospel Music Industry

Mr. Googs and Diedero complained earlier this year about the existence of camps within the gospel fraternity. If the urban legends are to be believed, it is said that there are camps within the gospel industry to whom one must pledge loyalty to. From the artist I have spoken to, both secular and gospel, unless you belong to either Genius Entertainment, Mo Sound or some other camp, your music will not get played.

And while I was reluctant to believe that gospel artists and deejays; people who claim to all serve one God would engage in a practice that is not only retrogressive but altogether destructive, the number of people speaking out is just too high and as they say, where there is smoke…
From what I was told, only huge stars such as M.O.G, Daddy Owen, Juliani and the likes transcend these petty camps because of how often their music is requested.

Diedero soon recanted his comment when the heat became too hot to handle.

I reached out to DJ Mo for a rebuttal and his response was that of a mature entertainer and a businessman.
DJ Mo said that there is no division within the music industry. All there is infact are a few disgruntled gospel artists who having no new material, get frustrated that their old material gets passed over in favour of newer music by young upcoming artists.

He cited the case of Mr. Googz when he made that statement and indeed, Mr. Googz has nothing new to show for his efforts and love of gospel.

When the topic of Diedero was broached, DJ Mo chose to say that Diedero has since recanted his statements. This after having called Baba Ghafla himself to give the statements he issued.

What could be afoot? Only time will tell. i must however say that I was impressed by how DJ Mo tackled the topic. If he is an example of how entertainers withing the gospel industry conduct themselves, there is hope yet!
